𐙚˙ Group 3: Simod sa Limod ✧˖
‘’Simod sa Limod’’ is a poem by Adonis Durado with very strong themes of abandonment and abuse. It reflects on the pain of betrayal and emotional distance while outlining the calm and reliable presence of plants as a source of comfort. By comparing the complexity of human relationships with the beauty of the natural world, the poem explores themes of truth and personal value, suggesting that nature offers a more genuine sense of peace and self-worth than the often deceptive dynamics of human connections. Additionally, the poem represents awareness for the people who are experiencing this type of relationship, as it highlights the author’s perspective, how the speaker deals with the struggles, and how this poem reflects our society.
The speaker is so disillusioned by her spouse’s actions, particularly by the broken promises and abusive behaviour that it reaches to the point of exhaustion where she turns to nature and inanimate objects for comfort. In the end, she decides to leave for her well-being. The poem is a beautiful depiction of the speaker’s journey in leaving her relationship and finally regaining her freedom. All in all, It portrayed healing and loss so accurately.
Adonis Durado is a renowned Filipino poet, hailing from Cebu. He pursued his dreams and graduated as a Knight Fellow at Ohio University where he now teaches. He spent most of his career working in the regions of Asia and Middle East before he arrived in the United States. His achievement highlighted his excellence as a design director, publisher, and as freelance director consultant where his personal works received more than 100 international awards. Given the themes Simod sa Limod— it isn’t difficult to assume that it likely reflects on his personal experience or it may be a work of fiction. The poem shapes the true sin of a person by which it affects their personal being. Adonis Durado aims to reflect his written works toward those who have struggled with certain life issues. He wanted to demonstrate that, despite experiencing domestic violence, individuals with strong beliefs have the right to open their minds, speak up for their rights, and seek justice. A passage that accurately corresponds with this poem is Psalms 72:14 from the old testament. ‘’He will rescue them from oppression and violence, for precious is their blood in his sight.’’. The verse is talking about those who are oppressed, such as the speaker, are considered precious in the eyes of God, so He will rescue them. It is a call to not despair in the face of difficulty, because God will save you in the end— which very much applies to this poem as well. With the guidance of God, she is rescued from oppression and so will many others.
The poem has a very fluid rhythm to it, with pretty words that roll off the tongue. The use of personification and sensory rhythm is powerful and memorable too which really emphasizes the speaker's connection with the impassive objects around her. I noticed that Adonis Durado tends to use a lot of imagery such as the line ''the water in the kettle will steam to dryness'' which paints a vivid image in the readers mind. The exploration of education and the quest for knowledge is strikingly portrayed through the speaker's bond with nature. The plants serve as a metaphor for nurturing and understanding, offering a comforting contrast to the chaos of the speaker's personal experiences. The speaker's feelings of isolation reflect a system that often overlooks the necessity of holistic education, one that integrates emotional support with academic learning. By weaving together these themes, the author powerfully critiques a framework that leaves many feeling neglected and unheard. This layered analysis emphasizes the essential interplay between emotional and intellectual development in fostering meaningful learning experiences.
I would say that socioculturally, the poem is a reflection of the challenges and struggles that many individuals face when trying to navigate through toxic/abusive relationships. The story highlights the deep-seated issues that can arise in relationships. In our society, lovers tend to misunderstand each other which leads to abusive and unfortunate mistreatment. This is something that is unfortunately far too common. It could also be seen as a comment on the way that society still often blames the victim rather than the perpetrator. This gives off a sense of societal pressure to remain silent and endure, which is further reinforced by the fact that the speaker’s partner was comfortable with assaulting her in front of other people. Our reflection delves into the internal struggle many women face between their emotions and the often silent pain they endure. Numerous men have committed acts of domestic violence against their partners, many of whom genuinely suffer from social and mental health issues. Additionally, this behavior reflects an individual's attempt to exert power and control over their partner, falling into the fallacy of appeal to force.
